The best known fictional work of the Bengālī novelist Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. It depicts the 1770  Saṃnyāsī uprising in Bengal as a war of liberation against foreign rule, and was instrumental in promoting the cult of Bhārat Mātā. See also Bande Mātaram.
