Important London subscription series (1776–1848). The royal and noble ‘Directors’ (e.g. George III, Prince Albert, Duke of Wellington) took turns to choose programmes. Another name was ‘King's Concert’ or, in Victorian times, ‘Queen's Concert’. (Sometimes confused with Academy of Ancient Music, 1726–92.) From 1804 the concerts were given in Hanover Sq. Rooms.
