US poet and dance critic. He was educated at Northwestern University, Indiana University, and University of California (Berkeley) and has written for several publications: Dance Magazine, Ballet Review (contributing editor), Dancing Times (New York Correspondent), and New York Times. In 1977 he co-founded Dance Chronicle (with G. Dorris) which he co-edited until 2008. He taught dance history and criticism at Connecticut College, New School for Social Research, and Long Beach State University, and has been author of several books including Dance (New York, 1974), The Nutcracker Ballet (New York, 1979), The One and Only: The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo (London, 1981), Ballet and Modern Dance: A Concise History (Princeton, 1986, rev. 1992), The American Dance Festival (Duke Univ. Press, 1987), and Art Without Boundaries: The World of Modern Dance (Univ. of Iowa Press, 1997).
