US astronaut. He flew on the space shuttle Endeavour in January 1998 when it docked with the Russian space station Mir for the transfer of more than 4 080 kg of equipment, supplies, and water. He was selected as an astronaut in 1994. He died when the space shuttle Columbia broke up on re-entry in February 2003 after a 16-day mission to the International Space Station.
