(1822–72) Confederate major general, born James Patton Anderson in Winchester, Tennessee. Anderson commanded a volunteer battalion in the Mexican War (1846–48), but his unit saw no action. He fought at Shiloh (1862) with the Army of Tennessee, and at Stones River with Braxton Bragg and Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge and led the Mississippi division at Gettysburg (1863), after which he was promoted to major general.
