Canadian dancer and director. He studied at the Dolores Kirkwood Academy and Royal Ballet School, joining Stuttgart Ballet in 1965. He was appointed soloist in 1972 and then principal (1974–85) creating roles in MacMillan's Requiem (1976) and My Brother, My Sisters (1978), Forsythe's Urlicht (1977) and Orpheus (1979), and Neumeier's Lady of the Camellias (1978), among others. In 1986 he was appointed artistic director of Ballet British Columbia, and from 1989 to 1996 was artistic director of National Ballet of Canada. In 1996 he moved to Stuttgart Ballet where as director he has focused on preserving the legacy of Cranko as well as encouraging a new generation of choreographers, for example Christian Spuck.
