Radar echoes that have not been returned by a specific material object and thus appear to come from clear air. Certain echoes are produced by birds and clouds of insects, whereas others are caused by abrupt changes in the refractive index of the air. The latter arise from sudden variations in temperature or humidity occurring at or near inversions.
