Anglican-Methodist Conversations

Quick Reference

On the basis of a suggestion by G. Fisher in 1946 that unity between the C of E and the Free Churches might be achieved if the latter would accept episcopacy, the Methodist Conference and the Convocations of Canterbury and York in 1955 agreed to enter conversations. The final report was published in 1968, in two parts: The Ordinal and The Scheme. It was accepted by the Methodist Conference but failed to gain the necessary majority in the Convocations in 1969 and in the General Synod in 1972. New talks were initiated in 1995, and a ‘covenant’ was signed in 2003.
