Quick Reference

A condition characterized by redness, soreness, and cracking of the corners of the lips. It is frequently caused by infection with Candida species but, where there is crusting, secondary infection with Staphylococcus aureus should be considered. It is associated with overclosure due to worn dentures, or excessive tooth wear, and nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin B12, folate, or iron. Treatment is by the application of topical antimicrobial cream and, depending on the cause, restoration of the vertical height, or prescription of nutritional supplements.

Subjects: Dentistry.
