was a leader in the movement for woman suffrage and an ardent lecturer on abolition and temperance. Her test (1872) of the 14th Amendment as allowing women the vote led to a famous trial. With others she wrote a History of Woman Suffrage (4 vols., 1881–87, 1900). She is the heroine of Gertrude Stein's opera The Mother of Us All (1949).
