Quick Reference

Bony growths borne on the heads of deer (Cervidae). Antlers are shed each year at the end of the rut and regrown the following year, producing more branches with each year. The antlers are covered with a highly vascular skin called velvet that is shed when their growth is complete, shortly before the rut. Only male deer grow antlers, except for reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), in which both sexes grow them.
