1 The smallest, indivisible entity according to the Vaiśeṣika system. All objects of the material world are produced by different combinations of triads of atoms, the triad being the smallest perceivable object whose magnitude is finite (for example, a mote in a sunbeam). Atoms in themselves are uncreatable and indestructible.
