A genus of glabrous herbs that have mostly pinnate leaves and leaf-opposed umbels. The fruits are broad-ovoid to oblong, laterally compressed carpels with 5 low ridges. A. graveolens var. dulce (celery) is a valuable vegetable; var. rapaceum is celeriac, with edible, turnip-like roots. There are about 20 species, of cosmopolitan distribution.
