apolipoprotein E

Quick Reference

An apolipoprotein found in all plasma liproteins that mediates their binding, internalization, and catabolism. ApoE is a ligand for the LDL (ApoB/E) receptor and for the specific ApoE receptor. Different alleles of the APOE gene are associated with variations in plasma cholesterol levels and the risk of coronary artery disease. Late onset Alzheimer's disease is unusually frequent in individuals with the APOE4 allele, although there seems to be no causative linkage. Defects in ApoE are a cause of hyperlipoproteinaemia type III, sea-blue histiocyte disease, and lipoprotein glomerulopathy.
