(c. 1416–65). Florentine painter and illuminator whose thriving workshop produced many of the finest cassoni (marriage chests) and painted furniture panels for the Florentine mercantile elite of the mid-15th century. Apollonio's style, as seen in the Aeneid Cassone (c. 1455; New Haven, Yale University AG), combined recent developments in Florentine monumental painting with a sense of narrative and emotional expressiveness that animated his decorative panels. Responding to the aspirant classical interests of his patrons, he was responsible for introducing many new subjects from Antique and modern literature (Homer, Virgil, and Petrarch) into contemporary Renaissance art.
