Quick Reference

Programmed cell death, which occurs as a necessary component of growth and development. The process results in cell shrinkage, followed by the uptake of dying cells by macrophages, without the possibly harmful release of cellular contents. Apoptosis allows control of cell growth and removal of possibly harmful cells. Breakdown of the system can result in uncontrolled cell growth, giving rise to tumours.
