A group of proteins involved in initiation of apoptosis. AIF1 (programmed cell death protein 8, 613 aa) is a mitochondrial oxidoreductase that acts as a caspase-independent mitochondrial effector of apoptotic cell death. It translocates to the nucleus where it binds to DNA in a sequence-independent manner and interacts with XIAP. AIF2 (373 aa) is similar in properties. AIF-like protein (AIF3, 605 aa) does not translocate from the mitochondrion to the nucleus and induces apoptosis through a caspase-dependent pathway.
