The fire-drill, used for kindling fire by friction. It is composed of two sticks, upper (uttarāraṇi) and lower (adharāraṇi), the latter being ‘drilled’ into by the former to produce a fire. They are personified in the Vedic texts as Purūravas and Urvaśī with considerable sexual symbolism.
