Fr. cornet‐player and conductor. Prof. of saxhorn, École Militaire from 1857. Established cornet class at Paris Cons. 1869–74, returning 1880–9. Founded modern sch. of trumpet‐playing and wrote standard treatise in 1864. His Theme and Variations on the Carnival of Venice remains a cornet‐player's showpiece.
