Guatemalan statesman. A member of the Revolutionary Action Party, he served as President (1951–54). His comprehensive agrarian reforms made possible the expropriation by the government of large estates owned by Guatemalans and US conglomerates. His administration was considered to be communist by the Roman Catholic Church and the US government and so the Eisenhower administration sent arms to Guatemala's neighbours enabling Carlos Castillo Armas to depose Arbenz in 1954.
