A phylum of protoctists (see Classification) that lack conventional mitochondria. Archaeprotists are anaerobes, and many are parasites. Some parasitic species, such as Giardia intestinales (q.v.), may once have had mitochondria, but these organelles underwent regressive evolution to become mitosomes (q.v.).
