Irish-born architect, who was John Rennie's draughtsman from 1812 until he set up his own architectural and engineering practice in 1818. In 1826 he was appointed Civil Engineer to the Government of Van Diemen's Land, for which he designed several distinguished Classical buildings, including the Custom House (later Parliament House) and the Churches of St George (1837–8) and St John (1834–5), all in Hobart.
