A subclass of diapsid reptiles that includes the orders Crocodilia, Ornithischia, Saurischia, Pterosauria, and Thecodontia. Thecodontians were ancestral to the other groups and appeared at the base of the Triassic. Archosaur is derived from the Greek arkho, to rule, and saura, lizard.
