Disorder characterized by pain in the arches of the foot. There are two main types of arch sprain: static and traumatic. Static arch sprain is marked by pain and tenderness along the plantar ligament and is commonly caused by prolonged stress on the feet, which may be precipitated by changing footwear (e.g. from flat training shoes to spiked track shoes). Traumatic arch sprain is due to overstretching the ligaments supporting the arches.
