Cold, dense water that sinks, to a maximum depth of about 6 000 m, from the subpolar gyre in the Greenland and Norwegian Seas, fills the basins of those seas, then spills as an intermittent southward flow through narrow channels in the ridge between Scotland, Iceland, and Greenland.
