A peninsula and adjoining inland region in NW Argyllshire, since 1974 Strathclyde, including the westernmost point of mainland Scotland. The peninsula marks a division between the southern Inner Hebrides, Mull, Tiree, Coll, Colonsay, Oronsay, Islay, etc., from the northern islands, Muck, Eigg, Rhum, Skye, etc. From 1156 Ardnamurchan was the northern limit of Somerled's jurisdiction.
