Arduino was a Venetian mining engineer, who devised a classification of the rocks of northern Italy, later adopted by T. O. Bergman, A. G. Werner, etc. He distinguished between the Primary (mountain mica-slates), Secondary (mountain limestones, with marine fossils), and Tertiary rocks (fossiliferous valley sediments).
