A fine grained abrasive quartz rock (novaculite) used for sharpening non-disposable surgical and dental instruments; it is found in the Ouachita mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. The grain of the silica crystals that form novaculite are approximately the same size (3–5µ), whether the stone is classified as soft Arkansas or hard Arkansas. After use the stone should be cleaned using a solvent.
