German Protestant theologian and devotional writer. His main work, the Unparteiische Kirchen- und Ketzer-Historie (1699–1700), is important as a history of Protestant mysticism and for its use of out-of-the-way documents. After 1701 he applied himself increasingly to pastoral work, and his writings of this period are devotional. He is also well known as a hymn-writer.
