Hugo Arnot was born in Leith on 8 December 1749 and died on 20 November 1786. He was educated in Edinburgh and was admitted advocate on 5 December 1772. He was active in local politics and opposed, successfully, the building of Edinburgh's South Bridge. He developed asthma early in his life and died at the age of thirty-seven.
