Bulgarian-British dancer and director. She studied with Preobrajenska, Lifar, and others and in 1942 joined the English International Ballet, moving to Ballet Rambert in 1946. In 1947 she moved to the Metropolitan Ballet and later guested with various companies around the world, frequently partnered by Nureyev and Bruhn. She was ballet director in Oslo (1966–70) where she helped to form the Norwegian National Ballet, then ballet director of the State Hamburg Opera (1970–1), after which she directed the San Diego Ballet. In 1976 she was appointed Director of Dance at the Alabama School of Fine Arts.
