A period during training (or learning a skill) when there is no apparent improvement in performance; the usual trend towards further gains ceases even though practice continues. Because this period is so demoralizing, it has been called the ‘plateau of despond’. However, if an athlete perseveres and continues the training effort for long enough, the period invariably passes and it is often followed by accelerated improvement. See also physiological limit.
