The intentional or reckless destruction or damaging of property by fire without a lawful excuse. There are two forms of arson corresponding to the two forms of criminal damage in the Criminal Damage Act 1971. Aggravated arson (triable on indictment) carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Simple arson (triable summarily) carries a sentence of up to six months' imprisonment or a fixed fine.
