arte menor

Quick Reference

[ar‐te me‐nor]

A Spanish metrical term applied to verse employing lines of between two and eight syllables, with usually only the penultimate syllable being stressed. The term covers a great variety of popular song and verse, mostly rhyming or assonantal. This kind of verse was deemed the ‘minor art’ because it is easier to compose than verse in arte mayor.
