A process whereby the amount of water in an aquifer is supplemented by engineered as opposed to natural means. Artificial recharge may be through boreholes, purpose-built ponds, or simply by diverting more water on to the surface catchment of the aquifer. Artificial recharge may be implemented as part of a conjunctive use scheme.
