Quick Reference

His collecting and bibliographical interests had two aspects: Cervantes and erotica. An Iconography of Don Quixote 1605–1895 (1895) was largely based on his own library. Under the pseudonym Pisanus Fraxi, he published three volumes of erotic bibliography: Index Librorum Prohibitorum (1877), Centuria Librorum Absconditorum (1879), and Catena Librorum Tacendorum (1885), all based on his own collections. On his death, Ashbee's collections were bequeathed to the British Museum (seebritish library). The erotica (c.1,600 books) formed the most substantial part of the restricted Private Case there. He is often identified as the author of My Secret Life, published under the name of Walter.
