Watenabe et al. (1999) J. Volc. & Geotherm. Res. 89, 1 suggest that the ash flows from Mt Unzen, 1991, were formed by the fracturing of the cooling lava blocks, and were thereafter entrained into the plumes at the tops of the moving flows. See pyroclast.
