A membrane-associated mucin (ascites sialoglycoprotein, mucin-4, 2169 aa) that is proteolytically processed into α and β chains and can be secreted. It has anti-adhesive properties and may play a role in tumour progression, acting as an intramembrane ligand for ErbB2 (see epidermal growth factor) which represses apoptosis and stimulates proliferation.
