A society founded in Calcutta in 1784 by Sir William Jones for ‘enquiring into the History, Civil and Natural, the Antiquities, Arts, Sciences and Literature of Asia’. Under Jones's presidency, and through its journal, Asiatik Researches, the society became the first major channel to Europe of information about classical Indian culture.
