In sport, the use of legitimate, acceptable physical force and the expenditure of an unusually high degree of effort to achieve an external goal, with no intent to injure (although another person may be injured accidentally). The goal may be offensive and designed to acquire a valued resource, such as yardage in American football, or it maybe defensive. There is considerable confusion between the terms aggression and assertion. Sometimes assertive behaviour has been labelled instrumental aggression, adding to the confusion. See also anger.
