A form of counselling or psychotherapy developed in 1949 by the US psychologist Andrew Salter (1914–96) in which people learn to express their needs, wishes, and feelings frankly, honestly, and directly, in a way that causes others to take them into account. Also called assertion training. See also modelling, social skills training.
