A means of assessing learners’ progress or level of ability. Such instruments may take a variety of forms, including the essay, the short answer test, the multiple‐choice test, observation of practice, and presentations. The choice of instrument will usually be dictated by the purpose of the assessment, the skill or knowledge being assessed, and the characteristics of the learners. For example, the essay may be considered an appropriate assessment instrument to test the comprehension skills of older, more able pupils; while younger, less literate learners might be more appropriately assessed by means of oral question and answer.
