An association formed in 1996 to represent and promote the interests of general further education colleges, sixth form colleges, specialist colleges, and other tertiary institutions in England and Wales. Membership is corporate rather than individual. Its board of management consists of 24 chairs and principals of colleges, including one representative of Northern Ireland colleges, and one representative of Scotland's further education institutions. Board members, excluding the chief executive and any co‐opted members, are elected to the board by member colleges for a term of four years. The Association holds an annual conference, and its other activities include consultancy and parliamentary lobbying. The Association of Scotland's Colleges (ASC) fulfils a similar function for Scotland's 43 further education colleges. Welsh colleges, in addition to their membership of AoC, are supported by fforwm, set up as a charity in 1993 and representing college interests within the principality.
