In the APG II system of plant classification, a clade of flowering plants that contains the orders Cornales (7 families including dogwoods, hydrangeas, etc.) and Ericales (27 families including balsams, heaths, and rhododendrons, Brazil nut, primroses, etc.). The asterids are one of the two principal groups of eudicots, the other being the rosids. See also euasterids.
