the ‘Sophist’, Arian theologian. He was present at the Council of Antioch in 341. Fragments of his works are preserved by St Athanasius (from his Syntagmation) and by Marcellus of Ancyra. Homilies on the Psalms ascribed to him have been recovered in modern times, though some scholars think these are the work of another Asterius.
