Best known for assembling the mainly medieval MSS that became the Stowe collection in the British Library. This collection—bought by George Grenville, 1st marquess of Buckingham and lodged at Stowe House, Buckinghamshire—was purchased by Bertram, 4th earl of Ashburnham in 1849. In 1879, Ashburnham's son, the 5th earl, sold most of the holdings to the British Museum.
