US fur trader and financier. He entered the American fur trade and by 1800 had established the beginnings of a commercial empire, with chartered ships plying both the Atlantic and the Pacific. His American Fur Company, formed in 1808, dominated the fur trade in the prairies and mountains within a decade. In 1834 he sold his interest in the fur trade and spent his remaining years managing his highly profitable property holdings.
