Located in Titusville, Florida, near the Kennedy Space Center, it contains tributes to astronauts inducted into the hall (52 by 2004), and the world's largest collection of astronaut mementos. It was created in 1984 by the non-profit Mercury Seven Foundation (now the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation), established by the ‘Original Seven’ Mercury project astronauts. Since 1987 it has operated in conjunction with the US Space Camp on the same site. In 2003, Sally Ride became the first woman astronaut inducted into the Hall of Fame.
