Overview

Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Lines

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

One of the fastest technologies for connecting to the Internet. It offers speeds in excess of 1.5 Mbs as compared with other fast technologies such as ISDN which has speeds of around 128 Kbps. Currently this form of technology is being offered to business customers or via wholesale agreements to Internet service providers. The technology holds out great promise, but is being implemented very slowly both in the USA and the UK; for example, in the United Kingdom time on ADSL networks is only initially being sold to Internet service providers. It is, however, expected that the technology will eventually percolate down to a mass market. The technology is regarded as asymmetric in that the speeds for uploading are slower than those for downloading. It is often abbreviated to ADSL.
