Italian modern ballet company. It was founded in 1977 as an experimental ensemble based at Teatro Valli at Reggio Emilia, but its repertory was expanded when Amodio took over direction in 1979 to include works by himself, Forsythe, Childs, Kylián, Petit, Balanchine, and others. It began to tour extensively in Italy, also to perform in the US, Russia, and much of Europe. By 1997 Amodio's own work had come to dominate the repertory and the company was perceived as stagnating. He was succeeded by Mauro Bigonzetti, who introduced many of his own works into the repertory as well as acquisitions from Preljocaj and Kylián among others. Bigonzetti has remained the company's principal choreographer after being succeeded as director by Cristina Bozzolini in 2008.
